Cows and Bulls, Mansions and Castles

So I bet you is wonnering wot all that has to do with my hike today.  I will tell you.  We hiked 9 miles at Hudson Highlands State Park in Noo York.  Furst we went into the woods and found a road.  A road in the middle of the woods! I wonner where this goes to...
OMD, it do take me to a big old mansion!  In the woods!
So this guy named Mr. Cornish (fur some reason cornish hen be stuck in my brain) used to live there and when he died in 1938 he gibbed his land to the state of Noo York to be a park so it would not get blasted up like the quarry on the mountain where we be going to later.  So the mansion just kind of falled apart ofur the years but it be furry interesting to eggsplore.  Here be some pikshures of wot it used to look like in the olden days. Wowser, that sure woz a pritty mansion back in the day.

Moving onward we commed to some waterfalls.  There be some litter (grrrrr) but we did not pick it up coz it be glass bottles.  They be too heavy to carry and mom is skeered if'n we fall down and the bottles break they might cut us and steal our bloods so it be too dangerous and we had to leave them there.

Then we had to start climbing coz if'n you dussn't climb up, you dussn't get any seeniks.
It dussn't look so steep in the pikshure but the first time I tried I slided back down and gibbed myself a pawdicure on the rawks, BOL.  Mom had to gib me a boost up then I made it and had to wait fur furefur fur mom to climb up.

TA DA!  Seeniks!  That mountain ofur there on the udder side of the Hudson River do be Storm King Mountain where we hiked in the spring.

And here be Bannerman Castle on Pollepel Island in the Hudson River:
So that castle woz builded to look like a castle but it was rilly a military surplus warehouse like a hunnerd gabillion years ago but it be falling apart now and they is trying to save it.  I think you can take a boat ofur there to see it up close and fursonal.

OK, and so we has this nifty feeture on our new camera where we can make pan-o-rama pikshures all instant magic like.  It do be furry kewl and here be one of the seenik so you can see it all in one pikshure:

So this be Bull Hill where we is going next but furst we has to climb down off of Breakneck Ridge where we is now, then back up again:

So we get to the bottom of Breakneck Ridge and I found a dairy barn wot used to belong to Mr. Cornish!
I had to check the perimeter thoroughly to be sure there woz no cows left there coz I is skeered of them. They always gib me the stink eye.  OK, all is clear.  No cows.  Shudder.

So then we started climbing up that Bull Hill after I had some refreshments:

It woz hawt and I woz getting tired but we made it and here be a seenik of that Hudson River from Bull Hill:

So rememmer I menshunned a quarry afore where they woz blasting the Bull Hill with Dy-No-Mite?  There be trees growing back now and you can walk around inside the quarry where there used to be mountain but that part of the mountain now be gone furefur and efur.
So where I be standing up above used to be all mountain rawk but now I is standing there.  Here be a pan-o-rama of the quarry:

So then we woz back at the car but we wozn't done hiking yet.  We hopped ofur the street and went to Little Stony Point to see the Hudson River rilly close.
OMD, more litter!  My backpack woz alreddy full of plastic bottles wot I had picked up (in case you were wonnering why I woz looking a little chunky) so mom picked up all this paper and a bunch of cups and carried them.
And then rite around the corner we found a recycling bin and trash can.  Thank dogness we could unload all that litter.  We had quite a haul today.
Then we seened there be a beach and peeples woz swimming in the Hudson.  EWWWWWW.  Mom won't even let me go in that nasty water and peeples goes in there with their childruns?
Then we found anudder trail wot taked us up on the cliffs where litterbugs not be going and we got some nice seeniks from there.  We could see the two mountains wot we hiked today:
And here I has anudder pan-o-rama from the cliffs atop Little Stony Point:
OK, that be all the pan-o-ramas we has fur today.  I swear.

New Camera and No Bear

Well, we did it again.  Yup, on Sunday we went back and did the furry same hike all ofur again to get it rite with our new camera!  Thank you all fur your informashuns.  Saturday nite mom went to Best Buy to drop off a big bag of old powah cords and chargers (they take them fur recycling) and to buy a noo camera.  The one salesdude had her talked into a Canon but then a saleschick told her it has a new round rechargable battery wot they duss not sell eggstras of and the charge duss not hold as long as with the square ones.  No good.  So mom settled on a Sony Cybershot.  And where she normally duss not get extended warranties, she got the 3 year plan fur this one coz we do be so aboosive with the cameras with hiking efurry weekend and all.

Now I can show you wot woz missing from Saturday!  By this lake you can look across and see the fire towah up on the Appalachian Trail where we is going to be later in the hike:
This is wot it looks like up close and fursonal:
And while I woz standing by that fire towah, I could look back down and see where I woz afore at the lake:
OK, so moving on from the lake, we had to walk on the park road a bit to hook up with anudder trail.
Slow down, mom, we has a speedy limit.
The bugs woz horribulls and the biting flies woz putting the bitey on my hed! When we stopped to take a pikshure of the pritty waterfalls they zoomed in fur the attack. Grrrr. Mom swatted them off fur me and got bloods on her hand from where they bitied me!
Our bear wot we seened on Saturday woz not at home. He must has been out celebrating Father's Day with his cubs.  Then we got back to that Appalachian Trail...
... and headed rite fur our favorite break spot wot we founded on Saturday. The biting flies did not follow us there, thank dogness.
Mom had to wear hers hat coz the bugs woz putting the bitey on her hed, too!

Down the trail a ways we found a tree with a hole in it!
From the udder side:
Rememmer those britches I found on Saturday? Let me refresh your memories:
(That Frankie Furter, BOL, thinks the bear we seened skeered the britches off of somebuddy!)  Anyways, the britches woz still there but they had been MESSED WITH!  Check it out:
And we woz being watched...
Wot duss you make of this?

And rememmer when we visited with my new furrend, the Applachian Trail thru-hiker with "Grandpa" being his trail name from Saturday? I refresh your memmories:
Well, we passed by that furry same rawk wot we founded him on but he woz not there. I wonner how far he made it closer to Maine.  I is not any closer coz we just did the same hike again.
So we finally gotted the hike rite with pikshures and all and we hiked 10.5 miles on Saturday and 10.5 miles on Sunday.  Going back to nap now.

Bad Camera and a Good Bear

Fur this week's hike we went to Stokes State Forest in Noo Joisey where we hiked 10 miles. We has hiked there afore but this time we wanted to take some trails wot not many peeples hike on plus part of the Appalachian Trail wot goes thru there to make some more thru-hiker furrends! Now be the time lots of thru-hikers be coming thru Noo Joisey on their way to Maine from Georgia.
We started out on a road fur a little ways from the parking lot.  There woz kewl sunbeams.
This pikshure is blurry but there woz these red efts all ofur the trail so mom and I had to watch our paws so we did not squish them like SPLAT!  We woz careful and hopscotched down the trail so we did not step on them.
So folks, after this pikshure:
THE CAMERA DIED!!!!!!!  Yes folks, it died.  This camera be only 6 months old.  It still do be unner warranty but that did us no goods NOW!  (If'n you want to know wot kind it is, mom buyed it coz the reviews woz good but she has nefur rilly liked this camera anyways. It do be a Panasonic DMC-ZR3.  She mite be getting a new one anyways and keep this as a backup when it be fixed so if'n anybuddy has a camera wot they LOVE, pawlese let us know wot kind it do be.)

So anyways, no camera and would you not knows there be major eggsitements shortly thereafter?  A bear!  We seened a bear!  It be our furst bear encounter in the fur up close and fursonal this year.  I will has to draw you a pikshure:
The bear stopped and watched us and we so could has gotted a furry good pikshure of him IF'N WE HAD A CAMERA WOT WERKED!  Mom woz talking to me so the bear could hear her voice and know we be furrends and just be passing thru.  Usually that makes the bears give bear booty and run but not this one, he stood pawfektly still and just looked at us.  So mom speaked directly to the bear.  "Good Morning Bear! Lovely forest you have here!!"  It woz so embarassing. The bear looked at mom like she be a crazy laydee, gibbed us bear booty and sauntered off nice and slow in the opposite direkshun.

So then mom had the most brilliantest idea!  She could take pikshures with her cell phone! (Duh.)  Mom nefur uses the camera on her cell phone so we stopped to take a break while she messed around with it and finally figgered out how to make it take pikshures.  Then she did not know how to get them off the camera so she figgered out how to email them to herself and got them that way.  Like I has menshunned afore, mom is techie challanged.  How embarassing.

Anyways, we has a few more pikshures from when we got to the Appalachian Trail with some seeniks.  They is not the bestest pikshures but they will has to do.
Peeking into Pencilvania from atop the Appalachian Trail.
This do be a fire tower but I did not let mom try to climb up the stairs coz it be skeery fur her.
Ummmm, is anybuddy missing their britches?
We seened several thru-hikers and just sayed "Hello" to them and they gibbed me skritches in passing to get their doggie fix since they had been on the trail fur months and not seeing many dogs.  But this Appalachian Trail thru-hiker woz taking a break so we stopped and talked to him and I got my pikshure takened with him.  His trail name be "Grandpa".
We woz almost back at our car and still had a full container of water wot we had not dranked out of so we gibbed it to Grandpa to fill up his water bottles coz drinking water be hard to come by on the Appalachian Trail.  Nice meeting you and chatting with you, Grandpa!
